Interested students should go into the Community Engagement Navigator (via uoZone) and select the project in which they wish to participate.

Selection criteria for uOttawa students

Student team members must

  • be registered uOttawa students
  • participate in a team leadership training session prior to the project
  • participate in the initial meet-and-greet and orientation session
  • be willing to participate fully in all program activities and work hard to achieve project objectives

Student team leaders (preferably bilingual)

Interested in being a team leader for a group volunteering project offered through the Michaëlle Jean Centre for Global and Community Engagement?  This training is for you!  You will learn and practice strategies for taking on a leadership role in the context of group volunteering. We will explore topics such as: roles and responsibilities, communication, qualities of a strong leader, time management, consensus building, and resolving conflict.

In addition to meeting participant criteria, the team leader must:

  • act as a contact person between community partners and the student team and address any issues that may arise during planning and implementation
  • have the same responsibilities as all other participants
  • complete team leader training and attend initial meeting with Centre and community partner
  • develop (or refine), monitor and update the project timeline as needed; ensure it is shared with the Centre, student team members and the community partner supervisor; inform others of project progress; adjust as needed to ensure project objectives are met
  • communicate with student team members, coordinate student team meetings, plan and assign tasks and project activities as per schedule and in collaboration with the community partner supervisor
  • lead team-building activities
  • write project summary in collaboration with the community partner that describes objectives, results and lessons learned; participate in debriefing interview and, as needed, preparing report of project achievements
  • encourage students to log their volunteer hours and support the community partner supervisor in preparing online student team member evaluations
